Ranch Compass started with a simple observation: the software sold to ranchers assumes a desk, a connection, and a billing model that charges the hired hand a seat. Ranch work has none of those.
Why we exist
Records should happen where the work happens.
Every operation already keeps records — in a calving book on the dash, a vaccine log in the barn, a spreadsheet at the house. The information exists; it's just scattered, duplicated, and one wet notebook away from gone. The tools that promised to fix this mostly moved the problem to a browser tab that doesn't load in the pasture.
So we built the herd book offline-first: the records live on your device, work with zero bars, and sync to the rest of the crew on their own. And because a record is only trustworthy if you know where it came from, every entry keeps its author and its history — nothing silently overwritten, ever.
Who it's for
Small and mid-size cow-calf outfits, first.
Ranch Compass is built for US cow-calf operations running roughly 50 to 500 head — the ranches doing real commercial work without an office staff. The herd book handles other species too, but cow-calf workflows are what we sharpen first, and we'd rather be honest about that focus than vaguely for everyone.
What we're not building yet
Deliberately deferred, not forgotten.
A small product that nails the everyday records beats a sprawling one that's mediocre at all of them. Here's what we've consciously put off:
Enterprise implementation projects
No onboarding consultants, no six-month rollouts. You should be recording calves the same afternoon you sign up.
Breed registry integrations
Registered seedstock workflows are real, but they're not where we can help most first. Commercial records come before registry paperwork.
Hardware integrations
EID wand and scale-head connections are on the list — after the everyday records they feed are rock solid.
